Each problem is different, and nothing can ever get solved unless the person decides they want to change something. What might seem like a problem may not be a problem, yet in other instances, a problem may be hidden.

There is nothing wrong with taking drugs. The issue is about control. If the person is in control of their intake, then all is well. It's when that control leaves that problems develop.

Some friends of mine have dealt with their problems by going through therapy or rehab, but this isn't the only way. A change of environment can be just as positive, depending on what the substance in question is. I'm hoping this will work for me and I think it will. It's important to know yourself in order to have an idea of what will and won't work for you.

As for the second part of the question, there are myriad reasons why people take drugs. On a very basic level, drugs make you feel good. That's the whole point. Some people are trying to escape from some aspect of their reality wich they find difficult to deal with, while others are simply trying to have fun. I started taking drugs purely out of curiosity. It's a very complex issue, but one which is synonymous with human society. People have always ingested intoxicants and the reasons for the ingestion are manifold.

In terms of abuse, people are, more often than not, fleeing from something internal. There is always some kind of internal conflict associated with substance problems, but these could be anything. As I said, each case is different, and there is always an underlying issue when a problem gets out of hand. In a way, it can be an attempt at self-medication, but more often than not the individual won't hav worked out what the problem that they're trying to medicate actually is.

I'll stop now, because I could go on for ever.

I recommend counseling, drug rehab, loving, caring and understanding family and friends, tough love. Factors that I believe are related to substance abuse and dependence are, growing up in a dysfunctional home, poverty for some is discouragement, mental, physical, and emotional abuse, depression causing some people to give up. All these things are major factors that causes some people to look for a quick fix or an easy way out.
