Rap appeals to the shallow-mindedness of most urban teenagers of date. Many rap lyrics are based on or around the lust for power, money, girls ("pimpin") and the good life, which many of the listeners are not accustomed to. On the other hand, some rap is an outlet for anger and many of these listeners can also relate to the feelings conveyed in the songs.

If you go back to the original hip-hop rap stars, you will find that rap was meant to help educate and empower the black youth. Many artists use it as a plateu do deliver the wrong messege. Real rap should educate, empower, enlighten, and strenghthen. i.e. artists like, Public Enemy,KRSone, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, etc..These artists vibrantly paint/ed pictures of the struggles of growing up poor.It takes a talented and skilled person to be able to put such experiences to music. Music for them is passageway to a listeners soul. . The stuff that is flooding our radio airwaves today dosent take any special talent or skill.
