They use very expensive equipment. They can send mechanical waves into the ground and break up rocks.

Other ways include the following ---

Seismic Exploration:

Explosive
Vibrator Truck
Aire Gun - Oceanic exploration

Detectors:

Geophones (jugs) - land
Hydrophones - Ocean

Subsurface Maps:

Structural - Locates high areas (traps)
Isopach - contour lines to show thickness of rock - estimates amount of oil or gas.

In the old days they prety much would guess. Now a days they will send sonic waves underground, when it reflects back it gives certain information to a specialized machine which draws sort of a picture for a scientist to review.

They examine the image to determine if oil could be in the location and they make a guess based on the scan.

It still involves alot of guess work. but there are alot less holes dug on a hunch, and oil is found easier.

We use high tech gadgets that enable us to see potential formations underground. However, the driller doesn't know until he brings up oil if there is any there. Even then, the formation might not produce enough to make it worthwhile.
