There is no general answer. It depends on the jurisdiction, and then it depends on the particular judge what to do at sentencing time. Most states take into consideration now whether this is a first offense or repeat offender, the property taken and whether anyone was actually hurt in the theft and so forth.

well a lot depends on if you have a record of any kind.. also it differs from state to state.. most states prisons are full but they will still sentence you to prison if they think you have been in to much trouble.. a lot of times they will give you supervised probation... they could give you so much jail time and probation and make you pay for whatever you stole but probably more than you stole...and you will have to pay to get out of jail,. court cost and all.. crime does not pay...so hope you have never been in trouble before and hope you learn a lesson from this or whoever this is concerning...a lot depends on the judge you get and the lawyer you have too...
