I prefer www.sciencedirect.com or wileyinterscience.com for research articles.
If you have access to a university library, Scifinder works well, too.
These are primarily Physical Science / Biological Science search engines.

you need to go to a University and use their library search computers... to find the really good stuff. Most stuff on the internet for free is put there by someone with a point to prove.. and their research can be very biased....
the good research archives are by subscription and it is not cheap!!

Go to a public library. You need specialized research databases. you may be able to access them online from your home going through the library website with a library card number.

Well, depends on what kind of research.
For chemistry, for example, there is the American Chemical Society pubs.acs.org/ where you can see the list of journals they offer access to; but to bring them up, you need a subscription (any university should have them).
The National Academy of Sciences journal is free. Look that one up.

for science news you may log on to google news and click on sci/tech icon
but for physics nesw or findings www.iop.org is the best
