A woman had a question about a 16 yr old and a 29 yr old guy being involved. Many answered that he should go to prison. In Pennsylvania the age of consention (old enough to give consent) is 16. What is the age of consent in your state? Do you think it should be higher or lower?

So far I read the 11 answers. Do people think that Tom Cruise is bad or should go to jail? He is 20+ years older than Katie Holmes. Same with Mike Douglas and Katherine Zeta-Jones. Also Demi Moore and Ashton Kucher.

The age of sexual consent is higher at 18 if the adult is in a position of authority over the person and uses this authority to coerce the person to submit, except if between legally married spouses.

16 is the age of consent, however, in the above case the disparity between ages is too great! He has a clear advantage over her and that is what is wrong.
She is still a child, who should be living with her parents who should get a restraining order!
Age of consent is a term and criminal term, which has little to do with what age children start having intercourse these days!
I have seen pregnant 12 year olds! Not a pretty sight and there is no way a 13 year old can raise a child.

The example you gave in my opinion tells me that the guy should go to prison as a pedophile. Regardless, of whatever the age of consent is in ANY state a grown man of 29 having sexual intercourse with someone as young as 16 yrs old is disgusting.
Plain and simple

I live in Ontario Canada. I believe the age of consent here is 14 however there is legislation that is to be introduced into Parliament to raise the age to 16 except in cases where there is an age difference of only 5 years.
As in the states the age varies from Provence to Provence.
My personal views are that the age of consent should be placed at age 13 or 14 for girls and boys. My reasoning is that younger than that, young teens or even before do not understand the implications of sexual intercourse. Some young people even at age 13 or 14 today are too immature for sex while others are not. It almost has to be a case by case situation. I believe it should be parental decision and training not the government position.
Many young people, even children are engaging in sex today. Most parents are either afraid to talk with their children about sex or they do not know anything themselves. This is the fault of our "Western society" and the religious taboos surrounding sex.
It is time for parents to grow up and properly teach their children. My wife and I have always been open with our children; today, they know they can talk to us about anything they wish to. They felt free to tell us of what they are doing with their bfs. Today most of them are married and have pretty good lives. They still come to us for advice and know they can talk freely to us.
Below are two related sites about children they are very informative for those who wish to read. They will confirm much of what I have said.

Georgia is 16 as well, Although you can be charged with contributing to the deliquency of a minor until they are 18. (thats just a misdemenor though. Fine and probation. I think a 29 year old is too old to be having sex with a 16 year old. I would say the same thing if he was 50 and she was 37. . . . It's just to big of a gap. . . . But no, he should NOT go to prison. Her parents should.

The age is 18, I think that it should be higher, you hear about it all of the time and people don't really listen anymore. There has to be something done about it. I think that 16 is pretty young. I do believe that the 25 year old should go to jail, its still considered rape.

i definitely do not think it should be lower.. though you see all kinds of young girls out there engaging in sexual activities...but a 29 year old man should not be seeing a 16 year old girl.. and in this state it would be a felony against him...i think the teenagers these days are growing up to fast and the parents should have more supervision of their activities... but this whole world you ask me is getting in bad shape... i had a child at 17 and i was to young and not respnsible.. i never had any street smarts at all.. but thank god i had a mother that took me in and helped me raise my children till i had enough sense to take care of a child...
