Best in terms of tactics was the 3rd Battle of Kharkov, best in terms of turning points was Stalingrad, best in terms of luck was Midway, best in terms of massed armour was Kursk, best in terms of individual exploits was Michael Wittman's Tiger I stopping an entire Canadian division outside of Caen, best in terms of air war was the Battle of Britain....i could go on, but 'best' is a pretty vague category.

This is a rather oddly phrased question, but I will try to give it a good answer.
In his book, "Incredible Victory," Walter Lord pretty much summed it up in the title. By all odds, the United States was outgunned and outnumbered as two carrier task forces maneuvered to intercept a major Japanese naval fleet which included battleships, cruisers and four major aircraft carriers, along with Japan's most experienced naval aviators.
Our three aircraft carriers carried the best aircraft then available, the TBD Devastator torpedo bomber--obsolete--the F4F Wildcat fighter--slower than the Japanese fighters--and the SBD Dauntless dive bomber, the most capable of the combat aircraft then in Naval service in the Pacific.
Our land-based aircraft were too few and too ill-prepared but an onslaught of land and carrier based aircraft harassed the Japanese carriers preparing the way for the dive bomber attacks that destroyed all four Japanese carriers. Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu.
We lost the USS Yorktown, one of our three carriers. We also lost most of our torpedo bombers.
But we stopped the Japanese thrust at Midway. We dealt them a blow from which they could not recover. They lost aircraft and ships which could not be replaced.
The battle was one of the most decisive of World War II. Was it the "best?" I don't know how one would catagorize battles, but I guess if there was such a thing as a best battle Midway would be a contender.

While Midway was an impressive victory for the U.S., there are two campaigns which move ahead of this battle: D-Day (June 6, 1944) and Iwo Jima (started February 19, 1945).

Midway was a great victory for the United States. It all depends on what you are talking about when define "best". I agree with the other guy, Stalingrad was a great battle.

Well let me see... As far as showing war ta-kicks it was a good battle. All the battle in WW2 show good war ta-kicks. So ummm for the best, I would have to say the on going battle at the easter front. It showed that if you spread your troops to thin you will lose.
scarily thought here:
It was a mad man, nut job, ******* ******, monster, and any many other bad words. That proved to be a Military genies.
Scare vary scarely indeed.

to the dude who answered first...shut up...
the Battle of Stalingrad showed more than any other battle in history what should and shouldn't be done to win a war and for that reason alone was the "best" battle of World War II...

depends what you mean by best
certainly midway was pivotal; it showed the us had an intelligence service that could decypher japanese messages, and showed the supremacy of air power. it also helped turn the war in the allies' favour(if that is aq good thing)
there were other battles- normandy, stalingrad, el alamein. gualdencanal- that had similar features.

I am sorry son but there is no such thing as a best or good battle. You may ask what was the bloodiest, the longest the shortest, which required the most manpower or material or even the most complex strategy on down to most novel tactic, but there is never anything good about trying to send another man to hell unless you are the devil himself!!

Yeah - lots of dead people - families without fathers - What kind of idiot thinks there is such a thing as a 'best battle'?
To the guy who answered second - My opinion is a valid as yours. I stand by what I have said - there is no such thing as a 'best battle'.
