You do not have to go to a dealer to service your car. However, you should know the maintenance schedule of you car if you are going to service it somewhere else.
Most non-dealer service stations will not tell you what services you need at certain mileage. You can either refer to the maintenance schedule that you received with the manual when you bought your car or you can look it up on the BMW web site.
You should find a good reputable service station and you will save a lot of money.
Good luck.

So what kind of warranty coverage does a BMW have. If it's out of warranty, I'd go to a trusted service station or "quick lube" place and have the oil changed at the designated intervals and have the other maintenance done according to schedule. If you keep all of your records to document the maintenance, you shouldn't encounter your problems. But, then, I drive a Ford, not a BMW.

You should be able to have it serviced anywhere even when it's new. As long as the warranty work is done and signed off on your warranty book.. it shouldn't matter where it's serviced... and if dealerships try telling you it does... I'd check the warranty book because it's probably just a way for the dealerships to screw you out of money by charging over-inflated rates for service.

Dealers are usually more expensive ... but they have all the parts on hand so they don't have to call out and have them delivered.
Why don't you ask around ... ask other BMW owners where they get their car serviced. Might make a new Friend.

BMW is a very intricate vehicle. I would strongly recommend taking it to a BMW dealer, unless it is something simple like a light bulb. But anything that involves engine or transmission, drivetrain components needs to be dealt with by a dealer.

Call your service station first. I have an older BMW and several stations refuse to work on them. BMW's tend to use odd sized metric wrenches--I've gone out and purchased my own.
As long as the station is reputable and willing you should have no problems.

i work for a high line dealership. you dont have to service it at a dealer. however you should always save repair and maintanance receipts to prove you serviced the car. it holds value if you go to trade it in. it holds more value if the receipts are from a dealer. if you have 117000 miles on the car, it probably doesnt book for much so do whatever. wanna trade it in for a mercedes e mail me.

you've payed up the nose for taking it to the dealership, but with that many miles on it there is probably no warranty to void, so take it to you local guy, its not like the do anything special at the dealers.
