Draw an "R" on your right palm and an "L" on your left palm then view your image in a tall mirror. Notice that the R and L in the image are still on your right and left sides, respectively. However, when you view the image as though you were facing another person, The R is on "their" left palm and the L on "their" right palm. That is a misinterpretation of the image; because it is not another person. If there were a true reversal of image (such as through a camera lens), the image of your feet would be opposite your head, etc.

that is slightly complicated to assert the image will advance its left hand. enable's say it will advance its hand this is on the right part. Then each little thing is fantastic because the image's head is upside and the raised hand on the right. the in straight forward words axis it really is reversed is the single perpendicular to the mirror's floor. notwithstanding that is a fantastic aspect. the clarification this became complicated is that our bodies are just about symmetric to this turn, so as that the image feels like a human became in the course of us. If we were no longer so symmetric, we would not imagine so.

Many of the responses have hit on the answer; it's not the image that's reversed. it is our perception of it. We see a person in the mirror facing us, Imagine your identical twin is standing in front of you facing a mirror. You see the image in the mirror; now take the mirror away and ask your twin to "be" the reflection. In order to do this, he will have to turn around, which he will do about his vertical axis, exchanging the positions of his right and left. He does not flip himself; that will not match the mirror image. We imagine that the reflection is a "turned around" person because that is what we would have to do to look like it.

Choose any object to your right side, when you are standing in front of the mirror.
View the image of the object inside the mirror.
Draw a straight line connecting the object and its image.
You will understand that the object as well its image is to your right side.
Repeat the same with any object to your left side. You will understand that the object as well its image is to your left side.
If you were a commander in front of a number of soldiers and if you raise your left hand and ask the soldiers to lift their hands every one will lift their left hands. The line joining your left palm and the left palm of a soldier will intersect the line joining the eyes of you and the soldier.
You expect the same thing to happen with the image in the mirror. But it is opposite to your expectation.
This leads you to come to a conclusion that the left side is changed to right and right side is changed to left.
But actually it is not happening.

If we are talking about a flat mirror and not a concave or convex mirror, then it is because the light rays reflect off the mirror in straight lines. i.e. If one is standing up, the light that reflects off ones forehead and into the mirror will bounce straight back and not angled down toward the floor. It is much easier to explain with use of diagrams.

Because there is no lens in between you and the mirror to invert the image, like a camera.

Because your eyes are on the right and left side of your head. If you had some strange top and bottom eyes, the view would be quite different.
From our perspective too.!

the image is not reversed.... your left side is still on the left.. your right side is still on the right.. the top is on the top.. the bottom on the bottom... nothing is wrong.. except...
instead of facing inward.. you are facing outward... hmmm... so.. the image is backwards.. it should be facing the same way you are!!! hahahaahahahaaaa! and then you could look at the back of your head!

It's not really showing it in reverse. It's showing light reflected from the same side it's coming from. Light coming from your forehead stays up. Light from your right ear stays on the right side. Light from your chin stays down, and light from your left ear stays on the left.
