The word comes from India. There was a tyrant goddess who stood for something having to do with acts of violence and chaos and distuction. A group of men would go out into the wilderness and pick of travellers by bludgoning them to death and stealing their money. They were complete jerks who looked up to this goddess and were called thugs!
