Both Italy v USA and Netherlands v Portugal were shameful displays of poor sportsmanship and the referees should be supported instead of made into the scapegoats. I can understand a fan objecting to the officiating but I think its also shameful that FIFA itself seems to be joining the bandwagon and not supporting its own referees. Tsk Tsk

NO!!!!!!!!!!! I am a referee and have been defending all the FIFA refs since the USA v. Italy game. To read some of my answers where I defended them go look at my answers on my profile.

But the sportsmanship has been despicable on the players' part. It is really unfair towards the refs by turning the refs into scapegoats. The players aren't following the rules; thus the refs are forced into calling a game the way they do. The players really try to make it difficult for us refs. I've watched all the games that have been "questionable" by all the Yahoo! Answers people and the refs are actually doing a good if not great job.

For those that think it makes the game more interesting, where do you draw the line. Where does it lead, to something worse. As things become accepted in the sport people will naturally push those boundaries further until there will be no game to watch.

They should be dealt with, quickly and severely. It brings the game down. They should at least be charged by an International panel for bringing the game into disrepute.

The blame lies with FIFA, the nations own National Football Association, Referee's and players alike. If it's not acted on by those in control, players will exploit things if the loophole to do so is given to them. If referee's are continually going to fall for and ignore this behaviour then they too share responsibility. If FIFA have not got the ethics do deal with it and continue to to be swayed by football politics, the greatest tournament in the world will crumble.

YOUR BLOODY RIGHT THERE MA8 I hate the way so many teams have go on into the next round through cheating. It should be like the 3rd eye we have in cricket, if the umpire is not sure he can ask for a 3rd member to look at the tv footage and then send his findings to the man on the field. If we had this in football when a player cheats and it is shown in the tv reply then that man should be sent off for cheating, i'm sure that would stop them from diving in the penalty area.

I don't think they were shameful displays of poor sportsmanship. I see it as the refs giving out too many cards and not really communicating with the players.

I disagree. A ref should be aware of teams and their personalities. The ref for both of those games kept stopping the game and when so much is on the line for the players unecessary obstructions can be frustrating. yes I would agree that holland team was very violent and even when maniche tried to extend his courteous hand to one of the dutch players, he just slapped his hand away violently. that is not fairplay. So you take two of the most mellow teams USA and Portugal and you throw them in with bullies like Holland and a ref who cannot do is job and you have yourself a nightmare of a game.

no way. bad sportsmanship gives the ENTIRE team a bad name and just because one player is showing bad sportsmanship doesnt mean the entire team must suffer from it. Plus, it spoils the game and gives people a bad look at what the game isnt.

i think poor sportsmanship should be dealt with by the most severe means possible. being an athlete, I can only dream of having my skills highlighted at the level that professional athletes do. not to mention the salaries most are making.
