because matter can't occupy the same place as another piece of matter, this situation would cause a rip in the space-time continuum and the universe as we know it would cease to exist.

There are those who would say that if the space were occupied, you wouldn't be able to travel back there at all. Others say that there would be a large explosion, as the atoms try to occupy the same space, and the energy is released. And others say that there's plenty of room at a quantum level for your atoms to co-exist with whatever is there (since we don't worry about the space being occupied by oxygen molecules, for instance), so you'd just sort-of merge with whatever was there - with distressing results if it was a building, for instance.

Needless to say, we won't know for certain until someone actually tries it. But if you're worried about what will happen if you do it, please try going *forward* in time, so as not to mess with the nature of causality. Thanks.

I have often wondered the same thing. It probably depends on your mode of transportation. If it's like "Beam me up Scotty" than you probably become part of the building, but if you are traveling in something, you would probably end up on top of the object.

I think we would find that there is a natural law that would prevent two bodies from trying to share the same place and time and one would be shunted aside just enough in time or space to allow the transfer.

Stephen Hawkin says as far as he can tell time travel is not possible. Other than the math behind modern physics showing it does not make sense, his simple statement that if there was time travel, why haven't we met anyone from the future seems very intuitive.

It would depend on whether you went back as an object or as a ghost. Either method still requires a lot of imagination, right?
