I recently noticed a variable whining sound from my Chevy Cavalier (2000 model). The whining soon stopped (after hearing it on just 2 short trips out locally), and then so did my air conditioning. Is it likely that my compressor bearings have failed so I'm no longer turning the compressor? Can anone tell me how big a job this might be and estimate a repair cost at a service station. Or suggest what else might be the problem...
Thanks

First off, be prepared to spend some dough! If you decide to buy the parts from an auto parts store, expect to spend about $300 on a compressor that has a clutch on it, and to get a warranty on the compressor, they may require you to buy an expansion valve/accumulator/orifice tube combo. The warranty will also require the parts to be installed by an ASE certified tech in AC work. The labor on something like this will be an addition $300-500, depending on who you go to and what the labor rate is. Most people like to just replace the clutch, but in your situation, I would go ahead and do it all. Your car will thank you for it and you have a long summer ahead of you! Good luck!

You certainly could have a faulty compressor, and could need a expansion valve or orfice tube, and a accumulator or drier depending on A/C system. Pop the hood on the car, crank the engine, and then turn on the A/C on. Listen for a click of the compressor kicking on. If you hear that and your lucky, you might just have a refrigerant leak.

OK, not the bearings...the fiber piston. It's probably locked up tighter than fort knox. It has also probably distributed its remains through out the system. You will need to get a dryer, an orifice, an a compressor. Before installing the new parts, blow out the condensor and evaporator really good. You can buy a flush kit and that works really well. It will cost some money.

You might be out of anti freeze or it might be leaking it. Or the air filter might be blocked. Recent problem with my car.
