Michael Jackson was a big story because of his celebrity...there is soo much focus on celebrity...and the media especially loves it when the attention is for something negative...because it sells. People love to see celebrites down in the dumps...because they seem to lead such charmed lives otherwise. Noone would watch if the commercial said 'all is right with the world...film at eleven'...I think that people like to see bad stuff on tv, because it makes them feel better about their own crappy situations. The media knows this, and cashes in on it. Another example is Iraq...I never see good things on the news about it on most channels, and there are good things. And the recent news about WMD's...not hardly a word.....but Angelina Jolies baby is on the cover everywhere...it's a celebrity obsession, and its highly embarrassing. Good luck on your paper.

There is probably the need to put the blame somewhere so that the public will be satisfied. Most journalists are required to have some sort of conclusion to their work, and the people want some type of closure on issues that interest them. If you can put the blame somewhere, then they are more satisfied with the work.

Bad news sells. If the bad news is about how some famous (or rich) person has suffered a set back, then this sells much more. People like to hear how the mighty have fallen. It's the definition of tragedy and tragedy sells more newspapers (or gets more hits) than positive developments.

I think it's sort of like people gossiping about other people only on a large scale. Some people will go along with anything, right or wrong, just to be in the majority. Sort of like, I don't care if it's right or wrong as long as it's not me that people are putting the blame on.

It seems that we as humans love to see it when something negative happens to "someone else." I guess it's our sick way of building up our self esteem, feeling that we are better off than someone.
