To some ppl it is like putting up a flag to other "freakies" that they are one. I think it is a waste of time to put that much effort into your looks, esp. to look so weird. The look is music-based, so that has something to do with it. The whole mindset is industrial-music based anti-mainstream (which is no longer true) with drug overtones. It is not common to come across a goth that doesn't do drugs or at least drink. This is another reason to put up the "flag"- drug connects. They also are (for the most part) elitist...and kinda snobby. That is also an appeal for some people

Most grow out of this Goth thing by their mid twenties at the latest. The ones that don't are the ones you should REALLY look out for.

every generation has a desire to rebel against the norms of society. "Goths" is one of the current rebellious attitudes. And as we know all youngins want to and absolutely need to rebell. It's thier right of passage.

When I was a kid, punks were cool and all the kids wanted to become teenagers that were punks. But by the time they became of age to attempt it, punk was out of fashion and hairbands were in. And then it moved quickly in the span of less than 3 years into grunge, the next degree over from punk but a bit different. It was easy to go from being an aspiring punker and slider right into grundge as they are simular. Once the Misfits jumped back on the rememberable scene and spurred others from the past to come back, all the old punkers remember them. That's what I'm saying....its in there growing up years as to what they latch onto and remember when they get to an older form and become that individual.

Now Goths.....I remember some of the early movement of the current goth pride. They would wear all black, paint their faces to resemble a pale corpse and complain about how death was inevitable and really investigate the darker part of their human existance. Kind of like some of the Victorian era individuals did.

I think the things that scare us the most in life are the things we are so attracted to. Death, subculture, suffering, an obsessive moment of romance. These are all part of it. These are also some of the same reasons vampires are so popular recently. Goths and vampires are not the same, but they do share some of the same fans.

I think it's personally for people who cannot identify with the general society and choose to be different from others. Sometimes, something as trendy as the goth look attracts a certain crowd and people just join because it's depicted as a cool thing to do.

Why is anybody attracted to any one thing? It's just the way you are. Wouldn't the world be fricking dull if we were all the same. Although neds should die! (Nobody from Scotland in the house? Oh well you won't get the ned thing.)

It is kind of a dark thing, like, to not be bright and like everyone else.. dark and mysterious, and also it sometimes give people a more rugged or bad look that they find just... attractive.

They feel that they are not accepted by the 'normal' crowd, so they try like hell to look like an individual, while really making themselves look all alike, and like a jackass to boot.

Goth chicks are hot though, I gotta agree.
