Yes, curiosity about taboo subjects can get a scientist blacklisted. Or at least that's what I've heard from TV

Any scientist that attempts to tackle a real-world problem with a scientific approach may have their career ruined. Like studying ghosts, UFOs, or life-after-death.

If they succeed at their goal, like ghosts, it undercuts the role of science as end-all solution / explanation for the universe. After all, if you have ghosts, and a spirit world, and there's a super natural "Will" moving chairs or making trees vanish, then what good is science in measuring anything and counting anything as 'real' or as facts??
