If you're buying the player off of somewhere like Ebay or Amazon, you really don't have to worry too much about security. I buy things off of both sites quite regularly and have not had a single problem with their CC security. As far as checking on the quality of the product, you really don't have that much to go on except pictures of it (if they provide them) and the description. There is a good way to check to see if the seller is trustworthy, and that is to check their seller rating. The higher the rating is, the more people have bought things from them and were happy with the purchases, so the higher the number, the more you can trust them.

I have bought many things on ebay. Including a palm pilot. I have never really had a problem.
I would suggest checking the sellers ratings on ebay.
If your going to buy from somewhere else, then try and buy from a site that is reputable.
As far as security goes, if it's that big of a concern for you, you can get a prepaid Visa or MC from your bank and only put on it the amount you want, that way if the number gets stolen you'll only lose that little amount.

I purchased my Ipod from EBay. The seller had excellent ratings and a high number of transactions. I pay for all my eBay purchased with PayPal- and at one point I had an issue with a seller and the problem was resolved by PayPal in a timely manner. Sellers rely on PayPal, so it's a safe way.
