my mare kicks other horses when im riding her. its so bad i cant really take her to pony club or shows and training her in a group is difficult and not much fun. i think she feels crowded and threatened by other horses as she used to live with a gelding who would bully and bite her on the rump. shes respectful to humans and is generally fine with her paddock buddies. any suggestions?

Awww, she's a kicker, yeah, it's not much fun. We had a mare like that, especially when she was in heat, and she nearly killed me. I did a Clinton Anderson trick of working her on the ground with other horses around, first a horse on lead, then several, then out in the pasture where they could act any way they wanted. The trick is getting them to quit worrying so much about the others and tuning you out, and getting them to look to you for guidance. Do a lot of speeding up then slowing down, change directions, keep her feet moving. It worked very well and soon she trusted me and quit paying attention to other horses and started listening. It does take time, and while she acts like this, be sure to warn others to keep their distance. You might even tie a red ribbon to her tail to be warning. For more info on Clinton Anderson watch RFD-TV or go to his website. Happy trails!

There's not enough room here to explain how to correct the problem. It can be done while ridding her. Find a professional trainer, and maybe look up a person on the web called Monte Roberts-The horse whisperer.

Tie a small red ribbon at the top of her tail to warn other riders to keep their distance. They should not be riding that close to your horse anyway. If she is not being constantly crowded, she will be more accepting of the occasional rider coming to close.

Try bringing her to a really good trainer who specializes in getting rid of bad horse behaviors.

every time you suspect she is about to kick seat belt her- grab the reins close to her mouth and pull it to your thigh thus pulling her in circles making it impossible or at least very uncomfotable to kick. if you are persistant and do this EVERY TIME she'll get the point, if not then take her to a trainer.
