The correction on the size of the city for Houston is 4th!
I've not lived in Chicago. Have visited and it was nice. Crime is everywhere. I just thought about that the other evening while watching the Houston news, but IMHO, it's not bad. I feel very comfortable in my NASA area suburb.
I've lived in Houston for 8 years. I came kicking and screaming from Cleveland, OH, but quite honestly I wouldn't leave if you paid me.
What I do have it to compare to: New York City (6 years), Washington DC (raised in its suburbs), London (study abroad semester). I'm really happy in Houston. You get the most bang for your buck. Salaries tend to be higher (not as high as Chicago, NYC, DC, LA) but cost of living is 1/2 of what those cities are.
Is it hot? Oh, my gosh, yes. It took 4 years of living here before I actually noticed the heat and could complain, but by then I was used to it and didn't. Do I miss seasons? Occasionally. I miss not living 2 hours away from a quick day of skiing. Culture is really great. Lots of great outdoor events because, outside of May-August, the rest of the year is available for outdoor events and activities. If you have a family or plan on having one, quality of life for raising a family is way better than more urban cities.
And my final point: the doors were OPEN almost a year ago and have not shut to Katrina evacuees from all along the Gulf Coast. Texans are friendly!

Having only been to visitor to either area, I would definitely go with Chicago. It's a real city with fabulous architecture and diversity. Houston is a suburbtown. It's a city without the city qualities and feel.
Both get pretty darn hot in the summer, so that's a toss up. Houston is milder in the weather - so there's a plus.
Houston is about Tex-Mex - Chicago is about Pizza!
good luck to you, all in all it should be a good experience to go from one end of the country to another.

Well let's see, chicago has a pretty high crime rate, but then again Texas had one of the highest like last year or this year or something, so both are pretty high in crime. Houston has more to see and enjoy, since its not as industrilized as Chicago. Houston has one of the biggest Wal Marts around as well ;). So I'd say Houston

To set the story straight. Houston is the 3rd largest city in the USA. Not 5th.
Yes, it's hot during the daytime from June, August, around 7pm it cools off to 70's and it's all good.
Houston has everything any big city has to offer and a bit more. 30 minutes to the beach in Galveston,TX.
30 minutes away to the country in any direction.
The wildlife, the calm life, the surreal life.
Chicago on it's good points, some say it's cooler, yes, then it freezes and your frozen. That will not happen in houston.
It has plenty of things to do, from trading the futures markets to art and everything else. Good Pizza, if you have lived their your hole life I'm sure you will fit in.

Chicago's better to live in than Houston because you can still walk around Chicago in the heat of summer. You can't do that in Houston.
There are lots of other reasons, but that's a deal maker for me.

I lived in Texas many years and I love it, but everyone is different. Chicago is a great place to work and has many wonderful restaurants, sports teams, arts, and activities, but it gets sooooo cold. Houston has the same, but it gets sooo humid. Try Dallas..... I think the cost of living is less in Texas too.

Houston....by far. Atleast in the winter we may have several cold days in the 20's tops. I love Houston and it will get my vote every time over any city and I have lived in several across the U.S. If you embrace the city with all there is to do and the people who would give you the shirt off of their backs you will love this city just like all the rest of us do.

I would have to say Houston would be better. The weather is nicer there than it would be in Chicago.
