I have been very supportive of him, and he's acted out blindly. I'm afraid future contact will bring about same results. Would you believe he's a retired psychotherapist?

No you don't have to associate with the guy. But if he hangs with your in-laws you may run into him. It is up to your spouse and/or your in-laws to set this person straight. Your spouse needs to tell the IL what has happened and they must do something about it. They in turn need to tell their friend that if he cannot behave respectfully toward you he is no longer welcome. If they don't you and your spouse must stop associating with the ILs until they do the right thing.

Lee, everyone makes mistakes, even psychotherapists. Give it some time to let your anger and hurt subside and then "if" the subject is brought up, which it may inadvertently or otherwise, tell your side. That is what judgement is about my friend, giving your 2 cents without all the facts....kind of sucks. Best to you. Nana

I say Hell No, psychotherapist turned psycho!
Would have been nice to know what the insult was. I assume it wasn't constructive criticism.

Most of the "mental health professionals" I've met are beyond condescending and verbally abusive. With that said, no, you are under no obligation to associate with him or anyone else who is toxic.

Limit your contact and be respectful when you do have to see him...dont try to insult him back it will only make you look bad in fron tof the in laws.

You wouldn't want to put undue strain on your extended family, but you also don't need to cater to the offending party.
