paulofhouston - ."I have never met a drug addict who wasn't a liberal." Do you know who Rush Limbaugh is? How about George W. Bush - arrested twice for drunk driving? Alcohol is a drug, too.

As for me- I live in the "Live Free or Die" state, literally and figuratively.

If they "hate us for our freedoms" like neo-cons are so quick to say, do they think that by taking away our "freedoms", maybe they'll hate us less?

My social security number was one of the millions stolen from the VA. Why the hell should I trust the government with my personal information if they can't take proper steps to protect it?

First of all, the choice between survival and privacy is a bogus and absurd argument. It is crude and oversimplified to the point of being meaningless. What "liberals" (and, to a much greater extent, libertarians) are typically saying is that giving up one's privacy offers no guarantee of survival. It doesn't even guarantee us any safety. It is, however, a huge step backward for our country and it is the complete opposite of the principles on which the US was founded. So why should anyone roll over just because they're told to? In essence, it is a tremendous hypocrisy, since Americans are often first to criticize (and bomb, and invade) totalitarian regimes, yet we are hell-bent on becoming one ourselves just because a few career politicians claim that doing so will enable them to protect us from unseen enemies. They are in effect telling us that giving up our freedoms is how we are going to preserve our free country. Is it working? They tell us it is, but of course cannot provide much proof, but then they also say we need to sacrifice even more privacy so they can continue to protect us. It's an embarrassment. We used to ridicule such Orwellian practices when other governments carried them out, and now we are desperately trying the same failed plans.

Liberals don't actually beleive in privacy. They're just griping about it to try to say that our President is invading people's privacy (the facts say otherwise).

They have no problem when the N.Y. Times invades the privacy of the organizations trying to protect us from terrorists. And they had no problem when Bill Clinton read Americans' e-mail with his Project Echelon. And they have no problem with Hillary proposing government control of the internet.

How do you spell liberal? H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E

Why do you assume that it's one or the other. This country has been protected for years with certain things in place to control what's done. One of these is for the Executive branch to go to a federal judge for legal permission to do certain things, like wiretap American phones. That is where the problem lies. Not because they are wiretapping, if necessary then they must. But because it was done illegally. And that's THE problem.
