First, it depends on the ants. For some species, spray poisons make is worse, the hive will actually split apart and you end up with a bigger problem. Some research (if you are pretty sure of the species) or getting an exterminator would be worth it.
Second, for the most part, you will just drive them nextdoor. I have heard it is smart to coordinate your actions with your neighbors. That way, they are less likely to come back in a month or two (after all of your poisons have degraded).

One time I had this great idea of burning the ants in my yard to get rid of them. I soaked the ground in lighter fluid, then lit a match. I'm sure the ants didn't like it, but they still came back. What really sucked, was that I found that I could not stamp out the fire once it started. It burned for a good 20 minutes before it went out. And there I was jumping up and down on a fire in my front yard for 20 minutes. Boy did I look stupid.
So to answer your question, get some pesticide.

I don't know if this is true or not but I was just at OSH Hardware buying bug spray when the guy there told me to buy cheap hairspray and spray it where the ants are and then they'll be attracted to the scent and take it back to their nest and it's supposed to kill them. If that doesn't work Ortho has asomething you put on your yard and it kills all the insects in your grass for up to six months.

Home centers sell insecticide granules that you apply to your yard with a garden spreader then water the insecticide in. This will kill the ants for weeks.
