Windows defender should do the job. Do you have it set up to scan automatically? If so, is the computer on during the time it is set to scan? I think the default time is 2:00AM. To scan now, open defender and click on scan. Adaware and Spybot are also free. Both work well but Adaware is a little easier to use.
