I can't believe people are answering yes to this question...hello, it's 2006!

Women are just as capable of making rational decisions, even if it is "that time of the month". People started saying women couldn't because they thought all of a women's energy had to go to their wombs so they could make babies, and they had no extra energy for rational thought or behavior. They thought women had to keep away from anything to thought-provoking because it would send too much energy to their head, and then they wouldn't be abe to bear children as easily! This is what kept women out of college and medical school for a long period of European and American history. Now that we have women lawyers, women doctors, women academics, and prominent women politicians, can we just put this rumor to rest?

First, let's look at a common definition of "rational": To be rational is to make decisions based on all relevant lines of argument and information.

Your question implies that emotion is irrelevant. I would like your reasons, if you have any. Regardless of what reasons you can come up with, I have at least one counterargument: Nature would not have provided us with emotion if it was harmful to us; put another way, we would have evolved beyond emotion if it was beneficial to do so. If you don't believe in evolution, just say God had His reasons for granting us emotions instead, and if your God is good, then emotion would be a gift instead of a curse.

Anyway, given that there is a good reason we have emotions, even without clarifying exactly what it is, we can still maintain that it is important to pay heed to our feelings when making a decision. Therefore, a completely unemotional person or decision is irrational, while one that takes emotions into account is rational.

Given that emotions are necessary to rationality, if women are more in tune with emotions they would be better suited to making decisions then men. This leaves us with only one question: are men or women better at maintaining a healthy balance between emotional and non-emotional factors when making a decision? Men, at least, often try to adhere to a non-emotional ideal, thereby causing themselves to be irrational, and meanwhile accuse women of being too emotional, which might but shouldn't necessarily be disregarded as coming from somewhat irrational men. That men are at least somewhat irrational is established, but women could still also be irrational, and perhaps indeed moreso. A deeper analysis of this quandry is beyond the scope of this post, but feel free to lose sleep and relationships over it yourself.

As this pertains to your question, it would be irrational to make a judgement on whether women are more prone or not to making irrational decisions before it's determined whether or not they're more able to effectively use their emotions than men.

Yes, and men make an awful lot of irrational decisions because we use our minds. Key is to find a balance and use both. That's why in marriages, the best decisions are made together by BOTH husband and wife. I'm not there yet, still learning.

No. Making decisions due to emotion still does not mean to be irrational. Both man and woman are rational and emotional and both are prone to make smart or stupid decisions.

Is it rational when man decides to start fighting just because he feels provoked or injured - although every conflict can be resolved rationally and without violence?

Can't believe how many women have been brainwashed into believing all this crap! Men have been preoccupied with their pri..s from the beginning of time and it sure affects their decisions.
Testosterone , or the lack of it is responsible for almost all rapes, crimes and finally war; and it's a pity that so many women actually have been taught to agree that they can't make rational decisions because of PMS!

Ladies, if you don't empower yourselves, you deserve to be left out of the decision making process.

Who says emotional decisions are irrational? Emotions are an important part of human existence, and I think discounting them is truly irrational.

Men make emotional decisions, as well. And irrational ones.

I love it in old books when they refer to women acting irrationally. They call it hysteria. Life would be so much simpler today if I could just write my girlfriend off as having a fit of hysteria, arguments would be avoided, not to mention the reduction in stress I would experience. Oh the possibilities.

Yes, but only because we are more in tune with our emotions! Thats why men are good counterparts to women when we think with our emotions they think a little more rationally.

Women are as rational as men. Just because any person is emotional that doesn't mean they lack a rational side.
