The most important part of learning second language is the benefit it provides you in English. You learn your first language simply by listening to those around you and imitating them. By learning a second language, it causes you to think more explicitly about how you use "language:" grammar, syntax, style, etc. The reason so many schools continue to teach Latin is not because it is "useful," e.g. allows you to converse with other people, but because it is a highly structured language that forces the mind think more critically and precisely about how it puts words together. Learning a second language is the best thing you can do to become a more effective English communicator. Additionally, the study of a modern language also opens many doors to travel and learning as well.
