I am stunned by the level of misinformation in the answers here.
A few people got it right. Gun laws vary across states and so does reciprocity. Go to www.packing.org to see maps of which states honor permits from others.
AFAIK there is no way of getting a national carry permit unless you are an LEO or some other servant of the state.
And laurenbk11 – Remember you don’t need a gun until you need a gun, and then you really NEED a gun!

The only permit allowing full access is on the federal level--there are some details that are in play between certain states as to their law enforcement personel but by and large these are simply state by state and carry no full access previledges

No, carry laws differ from state to state. Some states honor a reciprocity agreement, for instance if you have a concealed carry permit in Oregon you can carry in Washington and Idaho and vice versa.

No..
some states honor other states concealed carry permits. But there are some backward states who do not allow concealed weapons by honest citizens. These states have a worse crime rate than concealed weapon carry states.

Yes, North Carolina has a 'concealed weapons permit' You take a four hr. course and two hrs. at a firing range. If you pass and can shoot a gun you get the permit. It is only good in NC, I don't think other states recognize it. Don't mess around with a tar-heel. A true red neck has a pocket gun where ever he goes.

No, permits differ per state.
My question to you is why do you need a carry permit.
Why would you need this? Are you a diamond dealer, carry large wads of cash, transmitting state secrets, etc?

You have to be a LEO to do that unless congress decides to pass the bill that will essentially will make the gun permit the same as a drivers license under the Full-faith clause.
