Yes, it's very competitive. It involves long hours and you have to always produce high quality work in the shortest amount of time available. I'm sure you'd be able to find work in a reasonably sized town, but a major city is your best bet.

Actually, I am working right now as a Graphic Designer.
You don't have to live in a big city, in fact, I live in a small town!
Competitive? A little. Not only between co-workers but also those who "try" to design graphics. But always remember, if it's really good enough for you, then it should be good enough for your employer.

No you shouldn't have to move. You can work from home provided that you have a good computer, software and all other necessary tools to do your job. Provided of course that you're just designing the project/product, not actually printing/manufacturing it.

I do web design and graphic design from my home through my own company. It works out well.

i was going to do graphic design and saw that there really isn't any good money in it unless you work for a huge company.... i love designing on computers but you have to draw and love to draw so i took it all up as a hobby.

yes, possibly depending on what kind of job you want.
My best advise is to get the most schooling you can so you don't end up entering binary into a computer for a foot odor advertizment you did not get to design.
