overall, and this is a bias account, but HP's are the overall best "quality" laptop. There are other companies that are just as good. but with a reputation like HP plus the quality of work, I would HP over Dell or Gateway any day, even Toshiba and Sony.

I've had great success with Dells and HPs. It's not really so much the brand, but what's inside that really matters - in my opinion.

Dell is the worst, never by a Dell. Right now I'm working on an IBM, and it's alright. Nothing spectacular, but it usually works.

they are not even remotely "pretty much all the same".
I mean personally macs are the best overall.
a sony, toshiba are good high end pc manufacturers. they tend to offer the best features and new innovations.
an acer, hp, dell, gateway are good solid computers that are cheap. so it definately depends on what you are looking for-price, performance, or innovation.
