Yes. If you take the test too early the hcg level may not be high enough to register a + result. Anyone who gets a negative but is pretty sure they are should wait 3 days and retest. When you are pregnant your hcg level doubles about every 3 days in the beginning.

Personally, no. But it happens all the time. HPTs measure the hormone HCG in your urine. Often, women do not make enough of that hormone to register on the test. Each test has a different sensitivity level. For example, 1st response dectects much smaller amounts of the hormone, making it able to give an accurate response sooner. The best test to take if you think you are pregnant is a blood test. These measure much much smaller levels of the pregnancy hormone, so you can tell sooner and far more accurately if you are pregnant. Often, women have to wait a week or two, even after they miss their period for a HPT to register a low hormone pregnancy. HPTs rarely have a false positive, but frequently have a false negative.

I took an at home pregnancy test which came out positive so I went to my doctor's office to confirm and the test I took there came out NEGATIVE!! I explained to the nurse that I had taken a test at home that was positive and she became very concerned so she had me take a blood test...24 hours later my pregnancy was confirmed.

Yes, but it was in the early days of EPT's, and I did not yet have enough of the hormone to register. They are much more reliable now.
