No...the mark..usually a red hourglass shape is on the underside You have to flip them over. but be careful. They are the pit vipers of spider world. the top is shiny black. ..next day: I've just looked at Miss Chrissy's spider picture. It looks like a black widow alright with a red spot, but that's very unusual .Those that I've seen all have black shiny backs. Check it out on Wikipedia, Yahoo search or on a real life black widow.

No, on there bellies.

More specifically, Adult female black widow spiders are shiny black with an hourglass shaped marking on the bottom of its abdomen which, although most commonly red, may range in color from white to yellow to various shades of orange and red.
