As the last generation before us has tried to explain segregation and other measures taken against African Americans before the civil rights movement, will we one day be explaining ourselves to a future generation? And what will they think of us? How will we justify our behavior ?

Yes and you raise a good point. This used to be a land for everyone to come to. Now it is a country of a waiting list and no more room for the less fortunate.

Why? Are you treating them that way? I'm not. Just because you say something doesn't make it true. In fact, in California they have far more rights than I do as a citizen. When I go to the hospital I have to pay for my visit. I don't get government housing or free food. If I don't have the money to pay the rent the government isn't there to help me out even though I have paid 33% of my income in taxes every year. I will find it hard to explain why my grandchildren and I are the 3rd class citizens.

TomTom: You have never been here and have only spoken to one person from Mexico and you can form an opinion? Did it ever occur to you that that person is lying or is maybe racist? Really you should have more information. This is how rumors and lies get started.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head with this astute observation. I think that you are accurate in your prediction.

Recently the Canadian government apologized to the Chinese population for importing their labour to build the railroads and then deporting them after the project was finished. They recognized that they were ungrateful for the sacrifice made by these labourers, (many people lost their lives), in helping to build the Canadian economy. It is their grandchildren who received the apology.

I thought in this day and age, The United States of America, more than any other nation, stood for democracy, human rights and the fair and equal treatment of all. However the human rights violations in Iraq, the way in which Katrina victims (most of them black I might add), were treated when they tried to escape the danger and the tragedy of the hurricane's aftermath, and the way the Mexican immigrants are being treated like criminals...It paints a picture of a nation that is heartless, cruel, arrogant and despicable.

I personally believe that the Mexican immigration issue serves as propaganda for a government who is trying to veer the spotlight away from how much the war in Iraq is affecting the U.S. economy. They are simply placing blame elsewhere. While its citizens are busy getting riled up about the immigration issue, the real culprit (the war) continues.

No. In the future the United States will suffer financial collapse due to stupid people making stupid decisions. It's popular among fools in this country to think this issue is about Mexicans. THIS ISSUE IS ABOUT AMERICANS AND OUR LAWS. OUR EXISTENCE AS A NATION IS AT RISK AND IDIOTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT OFFENDING THOSE (OF ANY NATIONALITY) WHO DON'T BELONG HERE. Do you really think we can absorb 1/3 of our current population at one time without economic collapse? Do you really think that those people who are working here illegally will be employable for minimum wage? THE REASON THEY WERE HIRED IS BECAUSE THEY WORK FOR LESS. ONCE THEY ARE LEGAL, THEY WILL BE IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE. What we need is a guest worker program that sets a minimum wage of $1/hr for non-citizens, and dictates that those who commit crimes are kicked out permanently. Yes, this should apply to everyone, not just the Mexicans.

I have a wonderful uncle by marriage that is Mexican (born here).
He works hard, is intelligent, and he and my Aunt have one grown son . No one has ever had a problem with him being Mexican. The problem lies in the fact we have to change our culture, learn their language, give up our jobs to illegal immigrants. Our neighborhoods have Spanish business's everywhere and the neighborhood houses are filled with too many family members that do not car for the house or the yard and have little respect for the rights of others; ie loud music.
That is why they are treated poorly. Not because they are Mexican.

Mexicans who come here illegally are breaking the law....that means they are here ILLEGALLY.....do you understand that?

Mexicans would get more respect if they entered the United States of America by doing it the legal way like my great grandfathers did over 100 years ago...

You talk about justifying OUR behavior? What about justifying THEIR behavior who enter the country ILLEGALLY and demanding this and that? As illegals, they shouldn't have any right to protest...how many of these illegals have criminal records in Mexico? Many I'm sure.

Our behavior? What behavior do you speak of? 3rd class citizens, if they are citizens, they get treated pretty well.

I have been in this country all of my life, paying taxes for over 30 years. I'll bet that is I was in the same financial etc situation as a mexican person, they would get the same assistance I would get. What is the problem that you perceive? Enlighten me.

How can you compare the two. One was brought here against their will and forced into slavery. The other is sneaking across our borders and hiding in the shadows. Seems to me if the "Mexicans" (I'd personally would rather say Hispanics) don't like the way they are treated here they can GO HOME!

We're NOT treating Mexican like 3rd class citizens (who are the 2nd class citizens, by the way?).

Every Mexican who has followed the law is welcome. We all come from immigrant stock (okay, not the Native Americans) . Not allowing people to break the law is not akin to treating them as third class citizens.

And how ironic that you used that phrase, since they're not citizens.

It will be easy for me. I will tell them we had immigration laws and millions of Mexicans violated our border laws and we had to start enforcing our borders. There were so many here we had to round them up and send them back. After sending them back we moved all of our military bases to the Mexican US border and created a firing range and test range for weapons from California thru Texas. We made this area so contaminated with unexploded ordinance that no one could get thru the 10 mile zone and we have had no problems since that time.....
