The frog is where the blood flow to the hoof comes from. It contains the nerve endings that come down through the leg making it very sensitive.

The frog is a shock absorber and holds a great deal of the blood supply for the hoof. It is sensitive so the horse learns what to walk on- if it hurts it's damaging the hoof, so that should be avoided.
Every step helps push the blood back up the leg towards the heart for recirculation.
