Why do some people hate music that is supposedly 'emo'?

As far as I know, 'emo' is short for 'emotional'.

What's wrong with listening to music that has lots of emotion in it? Isn't that what we listen to music for.

I'm probobly missing a piece of the puzzle here so can you people clue me in?

Most people in this question has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I'm not going to go into too much more detail, but emo does not mean emotional. Emo is not Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Hawthorne Heights, Dashboard Confessional, etc. They are pop bands nothing more. You don't listen to emo, and I'm willing to bet that you never have. Emo is style of hardcore music that is short for emotive hardcore. It originated in Washington D.C. It is widely regarded that the bands Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, and few others started it in the mid 80's. Rites of Spring being one of the best and most well known. They took their music in a more personal direction with a far greater sense of experimentation. Emo bands aren't on major record labels either. Emo is anti-corporate. It's what defined the bands, and it's what still defines those bands today. You will never find an emo band on Vagrant, Geffen, Drive-Thru, etc. Those bands aren't emo, and never will be.

If you want real emo check out:

Yaphet Kotto
Policy Of Three
Portraits Of Past
Heroin
Antioch Arrow
Glass And Ashes
Planes Mistaken For Stars
Ordination Of Aaron
Current
Saetia
Hot Cross
Circle Takes The Square
A Day In Black And White
Four Hundred Years
Sinaloa
They And The Children
How To Beat A Dead Horse
Ampere
Appleseed Cast
Rites of Spring
etc.

If you actually take the time to listen to these bands, you will see that it is the vocals and music that makes a band emo, not lyrics. And band such as Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, and Hawthorne Heights, do not have those musical and vocal characteristics.

Emo is NOT a style of dress.

Their not gay.

Emo stands for "Emotional". It's also a form of music.

Like many sterotypes, it formed fromt eh music. The music has depressing lyrics meant to realate to someone in pain, emotional suffering. Somethign made to make the listiner connect to it more.

It's an insult because soem people take it to far.
This is where cutting and suicidal tendencies come in to play.Their making fun of people who walk around, depressed all the time, can't-form-a-smile, kind of people.

I don't really get why it's funny to mess with, but that's where it comes from.

Click below, you'll here "The Emo Song". That's the kind of fun people have with it.

The Emo Lifestyle is growing in popularity among teens age 13-17. An "emo" kid will dress in all (or nearly all) black, use eyeliner (males and females), and have a negative outlook on life. The "emo" of the '90s was the "goth" movement which tended to be a bit more sinister than today's "emo" fad(?).

Emo teens are known to cut their wrists.

Yes, Emo is Emotional and its like the music of My Chemical Romance and stuff...you use it as an insult because the ppl saying that to the other person thinks that THAT person is TOO emotional or has too much drama...

Most people try to be "emo" because its kind of clothes are in style now. So a lot of people don't really use it as an insult, but as a "clique" like preppy or goth.

Emo people are associated with those that cut their wrists, mutilate themselves and such and are like goths and like dark things and stuff and its a bad rep....Just cause a person is Emo, doesn't mean that he/she will go out and cut their name in their arm or whatever.

It's commonly construed as whiny. I particularly don't like it because it seems some artists are trading emotion for things like intellectual content and musical quality.
