Screws do hold better than nails and if you make a mistake assembling your project they are
easy to remove!
Those of us who are handy but not always precise always use removeable fastners !

In a word, Screws. Screws hold better than nails. It has alot to do with surface area. Nails have limited surface area where as screws have more surface area. The threads of a screw increase the surface area and the more surface area a fastener has the more Resistance it poses to the force exerted when the boards are pulled apart.

Will the project be holding some weight like a table? Will it be like a shelf? I would rather go with a screw because it creates a better grip against the two pieces of wood. How thick are the boards?

Well...Screws hold boards together better. The threads in the screw hold better than the smooth nail. It's all about friction, man. By the way...I"m 17 years old...feel like a failure in life or a dumbass now? Glad I could ruin your day.

screws. nails simply use the pressure from the boards to hold them together. there is lateral pressure only from the nail since once it passes throgh the wood, the pressure from that nail penetrating it is basically the only thing holding them together. Screws on the other hand, have unilateral pressure keeping them together. similar to the nail it holds when the screw goes through the wood but with the added flange on the screw it also applies more force since the pressure from the wood has something to hold on to.

Have another think and ask again. Do you really need a bookshelf .5m (20") deep? How many intermediate shelves do you want? You will need intermediate vertical supports - books are heavy. Unless you have the tools and the skill to join planks you will be looking at sheet materials. On -Contiboard- web site you can find and order free advice sheets. When you know what you want you can find this board in most DIY sheds.

Really depends on what you're fastening together. Screws are generally more sturdy, but really aren't necessary for a simple hold.

Basically personal preference. If you don't have a power drill, don't bother messing with screws... go straight to nails, it'll be easier for you.
