Compare "te amo" & "te quiero mucho"? And is that make "te quiero mucho" wrong becuz it meanz to really want?

Like when someone tells you "te amo" they mean i love you. but iz that t he same as saying "te quiero mucho" because of it meaning i want you. and can you use "te amo mucho" to express a stronger way to show your love?
