A "yard" in landscaping is a cubic yard which you can picture as a cube that's 3 feet on each side. Measure the length and width and depth of the area you need to fill. For example, your yard is 20' by 30' and you want to put in 6" deep of top soil. You would multiply: 20' x 30' x 0.5' (6" = half a foot). The total equals 300 cubic FEET. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard so divide 300 cubic feet by 27 = 11.11 cubic yards
You would need slightly more than 11 cubic yards of dirt.

Cubic yards is a three dimensional meaurement. It is a pile of dirt three feet deep, three feet wide and three feet long. Imagine a big 3 feet block. If you know how many square feet of dirt you are talking about and how deep it is, you can easily calculate cubic feet and then by a simple conversion cubic yards (or sometimes just called "yards")
lets do two examples.
1) You measure off an are that is 10 feet long by 5 feet wide and you need to remove 1 foot deep of dirt to replace with concrete. 10 x 5 = 50 square feet, x .5 feet deep = 25 cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard so you've got almost 1 cubic yard (25 divided by 27, so actually 0.93 yards of dirt)
2) You measure off an area 6 feet long by 3 feet wide and you want to remove 2 feet deep of soil for a koi pond. 6x3=18, 18x 2=36 cubic feet. 36 divided 27 is about 1.3 cubic yards. 1 1/3 yards.
