How about the Bingham Copper Mine? Very big hole in the ground where there used to be a mountain.

Salt Lake City is very much a cultured and exciting town. Sure, you can definitly tell there is a Mormon population (check out Temple Square anyway, it's beautiful), but it has 181,000 people, so it's not boring. There are great concerts and clubs, and the malls (Like Trolley Square and Crossroads) are fun if you like shopping.

More sites of interest:
LDS Geneological Library (if you're interested in geneology, you can usually find stuff about your family even if you're not Mormon).
The Salt Lake Public Library, according to Wikipedia, is regarded as one of the most state-of-the-art libraries in the United States.
Also, Park City, where the Olympics were held, is near enough the city to take a look.

I lived there for about six months in 1968, when my dad was transferred there for work. We used to love going to the canyons on the east side of the city, to the north and south of Mt. Olympus (it'll be easy to spot once you're there). Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon are two that I remember. They're great drives but the family would find a place to park and do some gentle hiking. Glorious scenery.

Also, in the Sixties there was an amusement park called Lagoon, up on the northern edge of town (well, the northern edge in 1968, probably the middle of the city today). Lots of fun for eleven-year-old me.

The mountains are beautiful just east of Salt Lake City. There is great hiking and incredible views. They are currently doing a lot of road construction on I-80 east of Park City right now though, FYI.

There are several national parks and national monuments in Utah. Bryce Canyon is my favorite, but there is also Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capital Reef, Cedar Breaks, Grand Staircase, and Natural Bridges. For me, southern Utah is just about the most beautiful place on earth.

I can't wait to go back out there again.
