Salt helps stabilize electrolytes in the fish. It helps the fishes chemistry return to normal. It also helps the fish breathe better.
I don't know how long it takes salt to evaporate out, I just add more by how much water I have changed. Example: I have a 10 gallon tank. I do a 50% water change, I add 5 gallons of water so 1 tablespoons of salt.
I do water changes about every month. (if I remember... bad fish mommy)
Hope that helps.
I just read my aquarium salt container it says for goldfish, add 1/2 teaspoon for each gallon

Aquarium salt as a general health tonic is pointless. At the concentrations that are suggested, even from the makers of the aquarium salt, the salinity from the salt will not help a fish breathe better, will not prevent or kill parasites, and will basically do nothing of any great benefit.
If you want to use aquarium salt to help a sick fish, use a salt bath instead. You mix the aquarium salt and tank water in a smaller container, and then leave the fish in there for a short period of time. The salt in the bath needs to be more concentrated then what you'd add to a tank as a "tonic".
The only freshwater fish I salt are usually coming out of the oven or off the grill.

The purpose of "Aquarium Salt" is to charge you way to much money for salt. Freshwater fish don't need. (Well mollies like it, but they brackish fish.) People will wave their hands and babble about osmotic pressure, gill function, electrolytes, and what not. In general they don't have a clue what they talking about. (It's really quite complex, and I could easily argue both sides.)
Table salt works just fine despite people obsessing about iodine. (Uh fish need iodine, and your pricey Aquarium Salt is from sea water which has iodine.) In any case you can buy kosher salt, and noniodized salt if you're worried.
What salt is good for:
1)Ich, but ich meds and heat work better. (Gold fish, however can take the need heat well.)
2)A preventive against bacterial, and fungal infections. This doesn't help much if you don't keep the tank water clean!!! (For active conditions you need a antibiotic, or antifungal agent.)
3)Making you feel like you are doing something.....
Adding salt is easy. Use 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons in your tank. When you take out water keep track of how much you took out. Add in salt based on the amount you removed instead of the amount you are putting in. Note if you aren't cleaning a goldfish tank at least once a week you need to be!!! No amount of salt will make a difference. Be sure to use a gravel vacuum once a week.

Aquarium salt contains no additives like iodine and in Small doses it can be very beneficial to your tank. Most parasites cannot survive in it and fish that live in it produce more slime which makes it harder for problems to occur. Add one level tablespoon for every five gallons and replace only when you do a water change as it does not evaporate with the water.

First of all including salt for your tank isn't going to medication your fish. There is whatever flawed with the fish. Try decreasing the water degree within the tank by means of a million/two-a million inch and permit Dissolved Oxygen to get into the water. Also, what different signs does your fish have? Since your different goldfish aren't pain from any variety of torpid conduct does your moor devour? swim in any respect? ANY salt adding desk salt will do. The quantity of iodine within the salt is wanted by means of your fish, crops and all dwelling matters. This is a further fable that iodine will kill fish. Every dwelling creature demands iodine. Iodine is bought in fish retail outlets to be further for your recent water aquarium peculiarly when you've got shrimp, crabs or crops. Whenever you clean out the gravel and stuff in your tank add about a teaspoon for every 2 gallons in your tank. The salt is something that is naturally occuring to a normal enviornment for fish. The advantage of adding a little to your tank is that salt helps to fight bacteria and sooths the fish. Some freshwater fish actually require a small amount of salt in the tank to live healthy.
