You can get a psp mod chip to make it compatible with all regions, though it's illegal to do so I believe. It'll definitely void any warranties.

Sony designed the North American Playstation Portable to be a region 1 device when UMD-Movies are concerned. The PSP will play games from any country in the world.

I am not positive but it may be possible to flash your PSP with Japanese firmware to play movies from that region, however.

The risks, however, are far greater than the potential returns. You can very easily break (called "bricking") your PSP and your warranty will be void.

I wish I could help you. I think you could probably try taking it to an electronic repair place. Maybe they can purchase a USA chip to work with USA UMDs. My cousin is having the same problem with his from Thailand.
