How would I go about getting a patent on an idea for something?

I know I can Google the question...but I am not finding exactly what I am looking for........I dont have the invention.....just the idea for one.....any suggestions?

There's that obnoxious commercial on TV that says you can patent your ideas, but they want money for telling you how. I would just contact the US patent office directly. Google should be able to give you the address and phone number. Good luck.
