I'm going to school in the fall as an English major. I have to have a new laptop but don't know which to choose. I also study French and use the Rosetta Stone software from time to time. I don't know too much about computers but I looked at a 13" Apple and it seems to fit my needs. All I want is to get a reliable, durable laptop that can handle my class work, language software, movies, music, wireless internet and minimal gaming for around $1500. Does anyone have any advice?

That last guy, as you can probably tell from the lack of anything factual in his statement, is suffering from what i like to call "stockholm syndrome". that and my friend (who also constantly defends windows as a good operating system) just bought an IBM thinkpad off of ebay and it worked for the first week. Now it doesnt. and they don't know why. They've done everything possible to the computer (she and her bf are both computer majors in college) and it still doesn't work.

Anyway, the apple laptop is definitly a great choice and you can get it for the price you want if you want a laptop that will go with you all through you're college and post college years. It is also an excellent choice for a laptop that requires no maitenance (Macs automatically Defrag the hard drive everytime something is downloaded or deleted, and it doesn't add any time to the download) it also comes with iLife now that has the iMovie, iDVD, Garage band (best music editing/making program that I've used) and a bunch of other cool programs. You'll also get Dashboard which is a freeware based program that you can download widgets that do almost anything to (I have one for texas hold 'em, almost any comic I want, and a chia pet as well as countless other, there are well over 1000 in all)

Plus with a built-in wireless router, you'll be able to tap into the wireless internet at your school with no problem.

And yes the rosetta stone program works for Mac and since the laptops have builtin mics, you can use the pronunciation portion on your apple laptop with ease.

An apple should be good for u!
The website for Rosetta Stone says that it works with MacOS.

Macintosh - Recommended
* Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
* PowerPC G3 400 MHz processor
* 128 MB RAM
* 100 MB free hard drive space

Make sure u have the software for Mac also (should have come in the same box/CD) and satisfy these basic minumum requirements.

Also, the newer Apple computers can also run WinXP. So if you like Windows, you can still buy a Apple and run windows as well as MacOS on it!!

DO NOT GO WITH APPLE! Apple is a sad excuse for a computer company. It sucks on so many levels and freezes up constantly. Not many things if anything works with Apple. Have a computer that is worth something and WILL ACTUALLY RUN! If it is not Windows, it most likely won't last very long. Go with and IBM Thinkpad is least. Ebay is also a good place to look!

You can get a good computer for less then 1500, you can get a good reliable notebook now for just under 700 dollars. I've never had an apple computer before, all the notebooks I bought we hp. But right now apple does have a thing going for new students who buy an apple computer, will get a free nano ipod for free.

I'm a Mac guy--definitely! It's a breeze to use and you won't have any virus or worm problems at all. Just buy Norton and immeidatlely install before you start going full tilt boogie. I've owned Macs since the late '80s--not a single thing has gone wrong with any of them. Amazing but true. I usually replace mine very 6 years and upgrade.

fits your description above, apple is a fine choice...though you might visit the Rosetta Stone software site and see if they have a mac version of your software, if so then you have nothing to worry about. :)

My husband is a Macintosh guy and I am an IBM girl. We both LOVE our computers. I HATE the apples. I find them harder to use. That could be because Im not used to them. One plus about the apples is that they dont get infected with viruses. But other than that, I absolutely hate them.

I love macs BUT make sure your Rosette Stone software will work on a mac. It may be a PC only software.
