I need tips on what to look for and what to stay away from...and what brands are the best...and what's best for college kids. I just flat out need help in every aspect of this search!

If you buy refurbished make sure that there is a warrenty and a decent return policy. Any laptop that is 800 mhz or better will do fine. You can get slower than that to keep the cost down but do not go below 500 mhz. Make sure that you have sufficient ram (at least 256) and a fairly good size hard drive (10G or better). A lot of the older ones came through with half of the above. Watch what OS is on it. You do not want Win98 or winme. Win2k is fine and Winxp only if you have 500 M ram.

Do not get a used Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq Presario, or Toshiba Sattlite. Try to find yourself a used Pentium 3 business laptop like a IBM Thinkpad, Compaq Armada, or Toshiba Tectra. These systems are much more reliable and will last for alot longer, you can also get them used for between $200 and $500 depending on the specs and what you want to get with them.

Check out www.tigerdirect.com

Dell and Gateway also sell refurbished laptops on their websites.
