I don't think there is an age limit to be honest with you. 14 year-olds babysit, so I don't think it's a problem. As long as she is capable of handling an emergency.

Illinois and Maryland are the only states that have any babysitting laws. See the site below for some guidlines. In short, it depends on the children. If you do not leave someone capable enough you could be charged if something bad happened to your children.

in ohio, I was told that it is not "legal" to leave any child at any age alone.
but it does depend on the child and the parent,
if you feel the 14yr can handle hurts and burns and dinner and get them to bed for and be responsible, then its ok. just call when you on your break and make sure you have the rules for the 14yr written down, and your work name, your work number, and neighbor to call if they cant reach you, notify a neighbor/or family member you trust for the 14yr to call and get help to let them know .
i let my daughter in the 3rd grade(she was 10yr old) I told her no stove, dont answer the door or phone, and leave window curtains closed, and that she could use microwave only. and that I would call and she had to wait for answering machine to pick up to make sure it was mom. and since then she has done fine. and has become very independant and reliable and self sufficient on her own.and responsible.

but in the end you have to feel comfortable and so do all your girls too. and you will do fine, only the law steps in if they have a fire.
