If you're adding to your current memory, you'd have 512mb plus whatever you already have in there.

You must know how much Ram you already have.Add 512 to that to get the total.It also depend on how many slots you have.Most computers have two slots and sometimes there is a limit to how much Ram you can have for that configeration so do all the investigation before you buy,and installation is fairly easy.Many times if you buy from certain retailers they tell you how to install.

But Dont do it Put one bit of ram in not two So buy a 512 Mb ram instead of two because one 512 is faster than 2 256mb ram

enough to run the basics...if you wanna play games or edit movies etc you need 1- 1 1/2 gig. Go to crucial.com and use the system scanner tool...it will tell you how much ram you have, how many slots you have open and show you exactly what to buy.

hardley none, go with gigs. 256 MB isn't even enough to download a movie nowadays. You want 70 or more Gigs at least.
A movie can take up 700 MB of space.
