We are building a new home in Arizona, about 2500 sq ft, and the builder is asking for about $3K to upgrade the exterior wall insulation to urethane. They claim that this insulates the home from sound, dust, and bugs (cold is not a real issue here). I am highly allergic to dust and almost everything that blooms, and my spouse really dislikes bugs, so we are considering doing the upgrade. Is it worth it, and why?

u can still get air which leads to dust from a well built house. a house has to breath. if built 2 " tight" then that is a larger problem. i doubt that the urethane will keep all dust out. it will help, but not all of it. take the 3 K and invest it in a whole house hvac air filter system. it will clean the air a ur ac is running.

Insulation is NOT going to have any effect on dust or insects! It will keep your house cooler when the AC is on (easier to cool), but dust??? Insects??? Your house is sealed on the outside AND inside of the walls....where is this dust going to come from..and insects? Naw, I don't think you will recoup your money unless you are building with adobe...different story all together. But a frame house with stucco or siding, drywall in interior...your legs are being yanked !
