The two sports were kicked out of the Olympics, unwanted by international sports officials who felt they were too American for the world sports stage.

The decision, made during a secret vote in Singapore, is effective for the 2012 London Games, meaning the two sports will have a final fling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The sports, the first eliminated since polo in 1936, are eligible to reapply for the 2016 Games.

Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the IOC, and baseball and softball were the only two that failed to receive a majority. The IOC then rejected adding squash and karate, which failed to get the necessary two-thirds approval. Softball reportedly was only one vote short of 50% needed to remain.

IOC officials were unhappy about the absence of major leaguers. The NBA has sent its best players since 1992 and the NHL stopped its season for 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.

So, basically the IOC wants to blame MLB for not disrupting their season so major leaguers can play in the games. But who knows for sure. I think the ballot should be made public, but it won't happen...to think, we'll have EXCITING sports like Archery, Badminton, BMX racing, Canoeing, Equestrian, Field hockey, Team Handball, Open water swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Modern Pentathlon, and Table Tennis, but no softball/baseball...utter BS....

I believe that both Baseball and Softball should be in the Summer Olympics and be reinstated in the Olympics because both Baseball and Softball are international sports played all over the world and not just in the United States of America.

Yes. It is definately a sport (They keep in things like table tennis but take out softball-- come on!) and it's unfair to all of the women who love the sport and would dream of playing in the Olympics, while the men still get to play baseball. If I played softball and were good enough to be in the Olympics I would be pretty pissed. (But isn't it just the 2008 Olympics it's gone for? Won't it be back after that? Wasn't this just for one particular Olympics?... just in China?)

I heard the Olympics have a set number of sports they allow. So when one sport is added to the Games, one has to be let go. In this case, it's the sport that generates the least revenue. I think they added Beach Volleyball and therefore had to eliminate Softball.

The Olympics is a compaction for sports. Softball is considered a sport. So, yes. Besides if they get rid of softball they should get rid of baseball, too.

I play softball and I enjoy it like heck! Boys have thier sports where they can only play like baseball and hockey and there is more but anyways if you took that away then you would be going against title x! Title x is where you have to have the same amount of education, money and other things for both male and female if you took that away it would be extremely rude. I would definetly go against that and protest because their are little girls out there that need to show their talent and ability and softball is our sport like football is a mans! I hope I made my point because I NEED TO STICK UP FOR THAT!
