It's normal to gain a few pounds in the beginning- everyone is different though. I didn't get sick during my first 3 pregnancies but the first few months of this one I felt horrible! For some people it goes away, others may be sick the whole pregnancy or not at all. Again, everyone is different.

You can't turn back the scales. That weight is there to stay for now, at least until some time after delivery. And you can't apply the extra kilos toward's next trimesters gain, either. Your fetus needs a steady supply for kilojoules and nutrients, particularly during the months to come, so you can't cut back on kilojoules now, expecting your baby to get sufficent nourishment from the excess weight you've already accumulated. Dieting to lose or maintain weight is never appropriate during pregnancy, and it is an especially dangerous game during the second and third trimesters, when fetal growth is dramatically swift and significant.

But while you can't do anything about the weight you've gained so far, there's plenty you can do to ensure that you don't continue putting on kilos at an excessive rate. Some women experience an overly early weight-gain blitz because they overindulge in the kinds of starchy sweets they find comforting to their morning-sick tummies. It that was your problem, it should be less and less so as quesiness tapers off and an appetite for a more varied diet returns. Other women gain too much in the first trimester because they've bought into the misconception that no-holds-barred eating is a pregnant woman's right and responsibility. Gaining efficiently, on the highest-quality foods possible, will not only accomplish the oal but will make the weight you do gain easier to shed in the post partum period.
