Why didn't they chose Tom Welling from Smallville to play in the new Superman movie? I think it would be a logical choice?

The new movie (Superman Returns) is supposed to take place after the last Superman movie with Christopher Reeve... Tom Welling portrays the younger Clark Kent, just out of High School...
...I feel where you're coming from, here, though... At first I was asking the same thing...

The reason they didn’t pick Tom Welling is because of copyright laws ,and Smallville is base on a younger Clark Kent.The movie Superman returns is base after the first three films with Christopher Reeve(get it Superman returns) plus there trying to get someone that looks alot like Christopher Reeve to continue the films.

the reason is that in order for tom welling os smallville to play in this movie, one of two things must happen:
1.) smallville is put on hold
2.) superman returns is pushed back about 4 years.
doing that would interfere with both the show and the movie/ icompletely think tom welling should play superman in a move but they are thinking it would be more like smallville the movie. you know? and we all know the they are NOT gonna push this movie back.
yes, routh does look alot like reeves, and the movie is tied to the old ones. i hate the storyline. i just feel this movie isnot a fresh start like batman begins, and is too dependent on the old films. but we'll have to wait and see.

It was their original choice, but the series is on-going. Plus, the script that was to be Welling's vehicle was canned. Brandon Routh looks alot like Reeves as a young man, so he was a logical choice too.
Trivia from IMDB:
When Singer became interested in possibly hiring Routh, he arranged for them to meet in a coffee shop. When they met at their table, Routh stumbled and spilled hot coffee all over the table. Although he panicked, thinking he had just lost the part, Singer laughed and said it actually helped him get the part. The incident convinced Singer that Routh could pull of the clumsy, bumbling Clark Kent.

I really like Smallville, but I agree. In the old superman films he only got weak around a small amt of kryptonite, now he nearly faints at the smallest amt. Go figure!!

because Tom's Clark isn't allowed to wear the costume at any time during the shows run and Brandon Routh fits Christopher Reeve's image of Superman better at this point

tom welling is a hottie, well it woulda messed with some peoples head i guess. but the superman guy is pretty hott too

I heard somewhere it's because of his commitment to the tv show and couldn't do the movie. This, again, hasn't been checked so it is hearsay.
