Most cities are set up the same. How lost could I possibly get? At some point, I must have known where I was. I'd retrace my steps and go back. Otherwise, I'd follow the signs to the airport or train station and get to where I belong.

Do I live in this new country? Or do I have to find my way all the way back here? If I lived in the new country, I would ask people for directions. People almost everywhere are helpful to people new to their country. If I didn't live in that country, I would find the American embassy.

I used to live in Japan, where you can easily get lost. I would first get my bearings, see if I could see anything I recognized. Look for signs, that could possibly tell me how to get back where I was. If that's impossible, head back in the direction you came from, find a central location that you can get back to easily and try different ways to see if you can unlose yourself.

Get transportation to the nearest big city - hitch hike or it that is not safe - take a city bus or train (those symbols are almost always universal). Once I am in the big city get to the nearest airport and take flight(s) until I get home.

Find a post office and ask. Otherwise, if that isn't available, ask untill you find someone that understands you. If that fails, find a phone, and if that isn't possible, then you might starve.
