OK, I am going to make some huge, sweeping generalizations here. Up until the 1970's northwest Indiana was full of steel mills and related industry. It never was a ritzy place to live, but alot of middle class families made a decent living in the area. FWIW the movie "A Christmas Story" is set in a town near Gary. When the steel mills closed in the 70's most of the jobs disappeared. Those who could afford to move away did. The ones who couldn't move away are still there. I have also heard recent news stories about property taxes skyrocketing in the area. Because industry is no longer paying property taxes, the burden has shifted to homeowners. Newspapers are full of stories of homes worth $100,000 or less with $10,000 annual real estate tax bills!

I don't believe there is. I lived in Camby Indiana and have had a chance to go to Gary and unless i'm mistaken, the rich section is the ghetto. I apologize to gary Indiana, but clean up your act people and gain the respect you deserve!

Gary is a working class town that has many out of work people. People move out to gated communities like 4 seasons.

No. I have a close friend from Merillville, Indiana. His folks had to leave Gary ages ago due to violence, gangs, crime and the value of houses shooting down faster than Billy the Kid shot men.
